Wagering Requirements Explained: A Beginner's Guide to Bonus Terms
"35x wagering requirement" is one of the most common phrases attached to a casino bonus, and also one of the most misunderstood. Here's a plain-language breakdown of what it means and how to work out whether a given bonus is actually worth claiming.
What a Wagering Requirement Is
A wagering requirement (sometimes called a "playthrough" requirement) is the total amount you must bet โ not win โ before bonus funds and any winnings from them become eligible for withdrawal. It's expressed as a multiplier, such as 35x.
A Worked Example
Say you receive an RM100 bonus with a 35x wagering requirement. You would need to place total wagers of RM100 ร 35 = RM3,500 in eligible games before you can withdraw. This doesn't mean losing RM3,500 โ wins and losses within your play count toward the total wagered amount as you go.
Quick formula
Bonus amount ร wagering multiplier = total amount you need to wager. Some operators apply the requirement to the bonus amount only; others apply it to the bonus plus your deposit โ always check which basis applies.
Not All Games Count Equally
Most operators weight game contributions differently toward the requirement โ slots often count 100%, while table games like blackjack or baccarat might count 10โ20% (or 0% in some cases) because of their lower house edge. Check the "game contribution" table in the bonus terms before choosing what to play.
Time Limits
Bonuses typically expire after a set window โ commonly 7 to 30 days โ whether or not you've met the wagering requirement. Unused bonus funds and any related winnings are usually forfeited once the bonus expires.
Maximum Bet Restrictions
Many bonus terms cap the maximum stake per spin or hand while wagering a bonus (for example, RM10 per spin). Exceeding this cap can void your bonus and any winnings, so check for this limit if you like to bet larger amounts.
Is a High Wagering Requirement Always Bad?
Not necessarily โ a larger bonus amount with a higher multiplier can still be worth more in total playable value than a small bonus with a low multiplier. The better comparison is the effective total wagering amount versus the bonus size, alongside how much time you realistically have to complete it.
